Tour featuring bands with 2 of rock’s greatest guitarists coming to Alabama

Without question, Nuno Bettencourt and Vernon Reid are two of the best electric guitarists to ever do it. They each routinely appear on high-profile “greatest guitarist” lists. But neither man really needs media affirmation because Reid and Bettencourt are deeply respected by legions of other guitarists. Their classic tracks sound as hot and fresh as ever. And at 57 and 65 respectively, Bettencourt and Reid can both still play their respective asses off.

In 2023, Bettencourt’s band, Extreme, has been touring with Reid’s group, Living Colour, as special guests. For fans of inspired yet accessible fretboard virtuosity and enduring hard-rock songs, it’s a dream pairing.

Extreme and Living Colour are keeping it rolling, including a March 13, 2024 show at Huntsville’s Mars Music Hall, located at the Von Braun Center. Tickets start at $37.50 plus applicable fees, on sale 10 a.m. Friday via the VBC Box Office, address 700 Monroe, and ticketmaster.com.

Extreme made their name with slippery boom, as heard on tracks like 1990′s “Get The Funk Out,” and acoustic gems, like “Hole Hearted” and course their chart-topping classic “More Than Words.”

Hailing from Boston, Extreme also features singer Gary Cherone (also known for his stint fronting Van Halen), bassist Pat Badger and drummer Kevin Figueiredo. In June, the group released their fittingly titled sixth studio album, “Six.” That release gained considerable buzz from the single “Rise,” containing one of the most electrifying guitar solos this century, which led to nearly 4 million YouTube views for that song’s music video.

It’s worth noting Bettencourt has also played guitar for pop superstar Rihanna off and on for years, including a Super Bowl halftime performance.

Living Colour’s iconoclastic riff-fest “Cult of Personality,” released in 1988, is one of the ‘80s’ best rock songs and possibly the best. Other Living Colour essentials include “Open Letter (To a Landlord),” “Type” and “Love Rears Its Ugly Head.”

The New York minted group also boasts soulful singer Corey Glover, drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Doug Wimbish. Their most recent album is 2017′s “Shade.” In addition to potent original material, it displayed Living Colour’s range and grasp. What other rock band could crush covers of bluesman Robert Johnson, rapper Notorious B.I.G and R&B great Marvin Gaye so convincingly on the same record?
